Friends of Jaywick Martello Tower - Tides of Tendring Project Co-ordinator 


Fixed Term: Eleven Month Contract

Rate of pay: Payment will be £4,416 for 46 days work

Project timescale: October 2018 to August 2019.

The Friends of Jaywick Martello Tower have been awarded £10,000 of Heritage Lottery Funding for its ‘Tides of Tendring’ project to investigate the area’s history of flooding and the growth and resilience of communities affected.


The Project aims to research the history of flooding in the area from Anglo Saxon times through to the modern day, which will include recording oral history of the evacuation of the town in December 2014 and February 2017 when the threat of flooding returned once again, and document how it has changed the landscape and the inhabitancies of both humans and wildlife and in turn raise awareness of the effect of flooding through participatory events, an exhibition and online resources. The project will create a sense of awareness for local people and acknowledge the remarkable resilience of a unique area. 



The work will entail:

  • Managing and encouraging volunteers in their work
  • Working with museums and archives across Tendring and the Essex Record Office to research hidden stories of Tendring Tidal problems
  • Managing a partnership between organisations
  • Co-ordinating a touring exhibition programme
  • Managing budgets
  • Report writing and recording progress for evaluation
  • Reporting to the steering group
  • Administrative duties
  • Undertake training as required
  • Traveling will be required



Project Co-Ordinator




Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Proven track record of successful heritage project planning, management and delivery.


2 year’s experience within the heritage sector

Experience of working as part of a team

Experience of working in schools or community context



Knowledge of contemporary history


Knowledge of evaluation models and their application to heritage projects

Awareness of relevant legislation (for example DDA, Child Protection Employment Law, Health and Safety etc)



Educated to Higher Education / degree level or equivalent in relevant subjects.







Effective communication and negotiation skills and a proven ability to relate to a broad range of external organisations and individuals


IT skills including a range of software packages, such as word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail and web technology


Good time management and an ability to manage multiple priorities


Ability to work to deadline and under pressure


Basic budget experience
